Ecosystem Navigation: Cultivating Entrepreneurship Across Indiana

At the Indiana Small Business Development Center (Indiana SBDC), our goal is simple: help entrepreneurs and small businesses start, grow, and succeed over the long term. Many are familiar with the work of our Business Advisors, but there is another role within our organization that is just as important but less understood; the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Navigator.
Different Roles, Shared Purpose
Every day, our Indiana SBDC Business Advisors work one-on-one with entrepreneurs and small business owners, providing confidential guidance specifically tailored to each business. In these sessions, Advisors help clients navigate a wide range of topics including business planning, capital access, daily operations, marketing, sales, financial forecasting, hiring, and long-term growth strategy. Advisors serve as trusted partners who support business owners as they grow and evolve.
Ecosystem Navigators play a different, but equally important role. Rather than providing ongoing advising, Navigators focus on helping entrepreneurs get “unstuck.” Their primary responsibility is to connect founders with the right resources at the right time in their journey. Often, this means making warm introductions to people and organizations that can help move a business forward. These connections may include Indiana SBDC and Purdue Center for Regional Development (PCRD) services, but they also extend to coworking spaces, prototyping studios, venture funds, chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, and other community partners. Because every entrepreneur’s journey is different, Navigators help ensure that no one has to figure it all out alone.
Deeply Connected to the Community
To be effective, Ecosystem Navigators stay closely connected to their local and regional communities. They actively build relationships, stay informed about available resources, and keep a pulse on new opportunities for entrepreneurs. Our Indiana SBDC network serves all 92 counties through 10 regional offices, and each office is staffed with a dedicated Ecosystem Navigator. While their role focuses on connecting entrepreneurs to resources, Navigators are also working on behalf of the broader startup community with an understanding that every successful business contributes to a stronger local economy by creating momentum, attracting new partners, and encouraging further investment in entrepreneurship.
Where the Work Happens: Building Relationships
Another key part of an Ecosystem Navigator’s role is engaging with community stakeholders and building the relationships that make meaningful support possible. This includes attending networking events, participating in local and regional meetings, collaborating on programs, speaking at events, and bringing partners together around shared goals. This work is especially important because every community is unique. Each city, town, and county has their own identity, priorities, and way of doing things. What works in one place may not work in another, and that’s why Navigators take a flexible, community-driven approach by listening first, understanding local needs, and then developing strategies that fit.
While differences in priorities, policies, and resources can sometimes create barriers, there are always shared goals to build upon. Navigators help bridge gaps, foster collaboration, and strengthen connections across the ecosystem.
Why It Matters
Entrepreneurship doesn’t happen in isolation. It thrives when people are connected, resources are accessible, and communities are aligned in supporting their local businesses. Ecosystem Navigators play a vital role in making that possible by helping entrepreneurs overcome obstacles, build meaningful relationships, and find momentum. In summary, our Ecosystem Navigators proactively contribute to stronger businesses and more resilient communities across our great state of Indiana.
